Business City Guide: doing business in Paris
Always err on the side of formality. Begin all interactions with the appropriate greeting (“bonjour” or “bonsoir”). French is absolutely the preferred language. Speak using the formal “vous” form, in general. Address individuals as monsieur/madame – only use first names when on very familiar terms. Business dress is always suit and tie for men, very elegant for women.
Handshakes are appropriate upon introduction, regardless of the sex or rank of the individual. Well-acquainted colleagues may kiss on the cheek. Innocent forms of physical contact, like a pat on the back, are natural and appropriate, even between men and women.
Refusing wine at lunch could be considered odd; at dinner, it is downright rude. An after-dinner cigarette or cigar is common, but non-smokers are tolerated. Business meetings generally start on time. Always arrive 20–40 minutes late for a private function or dinner. Flowers or chocolate are appropriate hostess gifts – never wine. Business gifts should be entirely symbolic, as companies/government are sensitive to anything that could be construed as bribery.
The French are proud of their country and sensitive to encroachment by English-language culture. Fear of “Americanisation” can trigger reflexive distrust of new products or ideas.
